Dave Beck Racing Set New European Pro Stock Record
Dave Beck was the first European Pro Stock Bike rider to run a 7.0 this past weekend at the European Finals at Santa Pod, resetting his personal best three times on the Ward-engined Suzuki. While a win eluded Beck, the new benchmark was a major achievement for the team.
In Friday qualifying, Beck stunned the field with a 7.16 at 185mph off the trailer, his first run on the UEM mandated unleaded fuel. Saturday saw a poor first qualifier as bike spun through the early gears, but the afternoon session saw a personal best of 7.15 at 185mph. “We were very pleased with a 7.15 in the heat of the day, while the rest of the field went slower” Dave smiled “I felt that was the run that gave us the confidence we were getting on top of the setup and into contention for the eliminations. The Ward motor is certainly more than a match for the Buell and VHR combos.”
Sunday saw the weather cooler and overcast and the team felt that even quicker times were possible in the eliminations. And so it proved in round one, with Dave taking the record by improving on the 7.13 benchmark set by Ulf Ogge’s Buell on Saturday, nailing a 7.12 at 185mph while defeating Gert-Jan Laseur on the Buell.
The semi-final proved to be a bittersweet affair for Beck. With Ulf Ogge predicting the Buell would break into the 7.0 bracket for the first time, Dave faced the consistent and improving Anders Abrahamsson on the VHR Suzuki. After being held in stage for an extended time, Beck lost ground on the line, but stormed on to a 7.07 run at 186mph, losing by 0.02 on the line, but smashing the record. “Put the loss down to the rider” said Dave “We knew we had the tune up in the bike and felt the record was on. I’m delighted to be the first Pro Stock rider in the zeros, it’s great payback for my hardworking team and sponsors.”
On his UEM debut, Beck had the following comments: “It was an honour and a pleasure to race with the guys at this level and I couldn’t have asked for a warmer welcome from Ulf, Fredrik, Anders, Gert-Jan, Martin and the rest of the guys. The qualifying and racing, especially amongst the top four, was the closest I have ever been involved in, with records falling and some very close racing. Congratulations to Ulf on taking the title and well done to Anders for taking the win against me. I was overwhelmed by the support and the number of messages from around the country, so thanks to all. I want to contest the full championship in 2010 and hope to make an announcement shortly. Finally, thanks to my super team of Charlotte, Ric, Tom and Stephen – records are set by teams, not individuals.”
